December 11, 1931: Osho is born into a Jaina household in the village of Kuchwada in Madhya Pradesh, India.
1932 – 1939: Osho lives with his maternal grand parents who provide for him an extra ordinary atmosphere of freedom and respect. Though he is always fond of mischief all his mischief’s have a profound meaning.
1938 – 1951 : At the age of seven Osho is enrolled in the primary school and continues his studies as well as his adventures and often takes up to the solitary approach to life. In 1945 at the age of fourteen he undertakes a seven day experiment in waiting for death, provoked in part by an unusual prediction of an astrologer.
1951 – 1956: Osho completes his college education with a post graduate degree from Sagar University for which he is awarded the First Rank and a gold medal. As a student he wins numerous awards in debating competitions.
March 21, 1953: Osho attains enlightenment.
1957 – 1970: Osho serves as a Professor of Philosophy at the university of Jabalpur. At the same time he travels throughout India giving public talks, challenging orthodox religious leaders for public debate, questioning traditional beliefs and meeting people from all walks of life. He reads extensively everything he could find to broaden his understanding of the belief systems and psychology of contemporary man.
1962 – 1974: in addition to his speaking engagements Osho begins to hold 30 to 10 day “Meditation Camps” in the countryside where he given daily talks and personally guides the participants in meditation.
In April 1970, Osho introduces a revolutionary cathartic meditation technique which he calls Dynamic Meditation. Describing this technique Osho says “Modern man is so burdened with the outmoded traditions of the past and the anxieties of the modern day living that he must go through a deep cleansing process before he can hope to discover the thoughtless, relaxed state of meditation”.
From September 26 to October 5, 1970: Osho holds a meditation camp in Kula Manali in the foot hill of Himalayas. On Sep 26, 1970 he initiates his first group of disciples whom he calls “Neo Sannyasins”. Osho’s concept of sannyas is based on total acceptance of all things in life. He says “The ancient meaning of sannyas is renouncing the world. I am against renouncing the world – I am for recreating the world. Don’t renounce the world – but renounce all the conditions that the world has imposed on you – renounce your religion, your cast, your god, your holy book. Sannyas is an initiation into your innocence. Be in the world, but don’t be of it. Live in the world, but don’t allow the world to live in you”.
1974 – 1981 : on march 21, 1974 exactly after 21 years of his enlightenment Osho moves to Pune where a commune grows around him. Very soon the trickle of visitors from the west becomes a flood. Osho declares : “I am the white cloud and the whole effort is to make you also white clouds drifting in the sky, nowhere to go, coming from nowhere, just being there this very moment – perfect. I don’t teach you ideals, I don’t teach you any oughts, I don’t say to you be this, become that. My whole teaching is simply this : whatsoever you are, accept it so totally that nothing is left to be achieved, and you will become a white cloud”.
1981 – 1985: Osho’s health becomes more and more fragile. In addition to his allergies, he has severe back pains and a disc prolepses threatens nerve damage. On June 1, 1981 Osho flies from Bombay to New York for medical care. A few weeks later he moves to a one hundred and twenty six square mile former cattle ranch in the high desert of eastern Oregon in the US. During this period a total of ninety three Rolls Royce cars are presented to Osho by his disciples. Osho calls this a practical joke to destroy the pride of the Americans that they are the richest people in the world. The enmity of the local residents is whipped up by vested interests against the commune. This is fuelled by the fundamentalist Christians who occupy the top most positions of power in the US. They eventually succeed in extraditing Osho from the US. While he was in custody of the US prisons, the agents of the State administer stealthily slow poison thallium to Osho.
1985 – 1986: On November 17, Osho returns to India. Following the harassments meted out to his disciples, Osho undertakes a world tour to various countries to meet his disciples. At the instigation of the US government all the countries (21 in all) where he goes deny entry to him.
1987 – 1990: After staying for a few months at Mumbai, Osho returns to the commune in Pune on December 30, 1986. As a result of the poisoning in the US, Osho suffers periods of ill health, plagued by pain in his bones and joints, difficulties with vision and sensitivity of light, lack of appetite and recurring ear infections. In spite of all this Osho lays firm foundations for the future growth of his work.
January, 19, 1990: Osho leaves the body.
Osho himself sums up his life thus:
OSHO
NEVER BORN
NEVER DIED
Only visited this planet earth between December 11, 1931 and January 19, 1990
About his work and vision Osho himself says thus:
“My trust in existence is absolute. If there is any truth in what I am saying, it will survive. The people who remain interested in my work will be simply carrying the torch hut not imposing anything on any one”.
“I will remain a source of inspiration to my people. And that is what most Sannyasins will feel. I want them to grow on their own – qualities like love around which no church can be created, like awareness which is no-body’s monopoly; like celebration, rejoicing, and maintaining fresh child like eys…..
“I want my people to know themselves, not to be according to some one else”.
“AND THE WAY IS IN”
